Foundation Ursula e Gunter Böhmer

Museums and foundations
Collina d'Oro

After his death in 1986, the draughtsman, painter and illustrator left a wide range of works: the Ticino legacy includes numerous drawings and watercolours, most of the oils, several sketchbooks and some engravings, as well as many of the illustrated books that Gunter Böhmer produced throughout his artistic career.

To date, 2.785 works have been catalogued, including 225 oils; however, it is estimated that the number of works preserved in the archive is much higher, which could be as high as 10.000 units: all materials have been digitized and acquired in both high and low resolution and filed through the Claris FileMaker management system hosted on the City's servers, awaiting a patient scientific cataloguing.

The online catalogue

The challenging task of cataloging the works of Gunter Böhmer is among the key objectives embraced by the Ursula and Gunter Böhmer Foundation since the early stages of its inception. The primary mission of the Foundation is to carefully preserve the artist's creations, advancing in parallel with cataloging, together with the re-elaboration and in-depth scientific analysis of their contents. Through this process, the aspiration is to make Gunter Böhmer's thought and artistic production accessible to a wide audience, both locally and nationally, but also beyond borders.

The desire to publish the artist's catalog raisonné represents a project that is in line with the work carried out since the foundation year of the Ursula and Gunter Böhmer Foundation within the archive that houses the artist's heritage.

Gunther Böhmer

Drawing pencil has been Gunter Böhmer’s most important and preferred medium of expression throughout his life. The quick mark, the just mentioned line, the accentuated hatching allowed him to react quickly to everything around him and to what he felt on his skin.

The drawings

Drawing was also the preferred technique of his illustrative activity. From his first assignment – the new edition of Hermann Hesse’s youth novel “Hermann Lauscher” – until Gunter Böhmer’s death, he illustrated or designed around 500 literary works, many of them for renowned publishers and writers known all over the world, but also for contemporary authors of regional or trans-regional significance.

A kaleidoscope of images

The "Works" section, which is still being compiled, will show the versatility of Gunther Böhmer's work, allowing a wide range of works ranging from oil painting to refined drawing notebooks to be displayed together or filtered by technique, period of realization or subject.
